Mr. Supranational 2024 Joins Leprosy Awareness Campaign in Ethiopia

The Sasakawa Leprosy (Hansen’s Disease) Initiative, in collaboration with the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), has launched a leprosy awareness campaign in Ethiopia, running from January 21 to January 26, 2025. This initiative was carried out together with Mr. Supranational 2024, Dr. Fezile Mkhize, who is not only the titleholder but also a dedicated medical doctor. Leveraging his expertise, Dr. Fezile is working to dispel misconceptions about leprosy, promote accurate information, and combat the stigma associated with the disease.

Upon his arrival in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Dr. Fezile met with experts at AHRI to gain deeper insights into leprosy research and ongoing efforts in the country. His presence marked a significant step in raising awareness, particularly as World Leprosy Day approached on the upcoming Sunday. Engaging with medical professionals, community leaders, and individuals affected by the disease, he shed light on the strides being made to fight against leprosy and the challenges that still remain.

A highlight of the campaign was Dr. Fezile’s interaction with Ms. Birke Nigatu, an inspirational woman who has experienced leprosy and previously served as a representative of Ethiopian National Association of Persons Affected by Leprosy (ENAPAL). Despite the physical impact of the disease on her hands, Ms. Birke has dedicated her life to empowering others affected by leprosy. She has established a community of women who weave beautiful garments, enabling them to earn an income and regain a sense of independence. Her dream is to expand her business internationally, bringing economic sustainability to her community.

Ms. Birke declared, “WE ARE STRONG, WE ARE CAPABLE, and LEPROSY IS NOT A LIFELONG PROBLEM!” Her powerful words resonate with the heart of this campaign—a movement that seeks not just to raise awareness but to create lasting change.

The campaign also took Dr. Fezile to Shashamane, where he connected with children in a local village. His visit emphasized the importance of fostering understanding from a young age and instilling values of dignity and respect for those affected by leprosy.

The campaign culminated on World Leprosy Day with a special event at Elilly International Hotel, where ENAPAL and government officials delivered strong messages to reinforce the commitment to solving leprosy-related challenges. Dr. Fezile also took part in the event as a guest speaker, wearing a garment with beautiful embroidery made by people affected by leprosy.

Dr. Fezile’s involvement in this campaign underscored the urgent need for global action in the fight against leprosy and its related challenges. By sharing personal stories and highlighting local efforts, he drove forward the message that no one should be left behind.
